CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Ammon

“What is the meaning of this?” Lady Tullmore’s voice echoed from within the manor. “I told you that I was not to be disturbed!”

“Yes, mother. These men say that they were sent by the prince, I think they are here to warn us of something. He demanded to see you at once. I was afraid if I did not relent that they would barge in anyway.” The young man replied in a trembling voice.

Sir Kellor stood just outside of the manor’s open doors. He hoisted his helm, careful to keep his hands away from the hilt of his sword. He did not want to seem threatening to the lady, surely she would see reason once he explained the purpose for their intrusion and scold her guardsmen for being so cold to a representative of the king. The Harringalese have invaded our borders with a raiding force meant to divert the king’s army away from our shared border with them. We know they are in the area and headed this way.”

Lady Tullmore raised a hand to her mouth. She stood stone still for a moment with wide eyes set on Sir Kellor as if she were trying to pry through his armor and see his soul. Her eyes narrowed. “So it is true.”

“You knew of this already?” Sir Kellor felt a frown taking over his brows as confusion dug into his mind like a pair of knives.

Lady Tullmore feigned a half smile. “I have been told of the threat of invasion and the raiding force that is meant to draw the king’s army away. What I am at a loss for is why the king would send a scant handful of men. Is there some slight we have given
